RTS 4-Pinion Front Planetary - 24 SplineThe standard OEM front planetary is another weak link that needs attention when trying to make the C4 transmission survive in a performance environment. The original design planetary has only 3 gears and does not include any bearings, which generates a lot of heat and makes it prone to failure. Our new 4-pinion planetary has 4 gears instead of the OEM 3 for extra strength, while also adding bearings on each of the 4 pinions and thrust shims to reduce premature wear and friction within the gearbox. This reduces the heat generated in the transmission, increasing system efficiency (less HP loss) and lowering transmission oil temperatures (the transmission’s worst enemy)!
All these features are incorporated into a 4140 Chromoly CNC-machined housing with 8620 heat-treated steel helical gears held in place with Chromoly pins, which are deep hardened to HRC60-65. Many people believe that the 6-pinion version is the best unit to buy, which is not entirely correct. Six-pinion planetaries are heavier, take more power to drive, and the housing strength is compromised to accommodate the extra gears. RTS has reviewed the pros and cons of these designs and determined that the 4-Pinion version is the best choice for your race-winning transmission.

Note: Most transmission builders are well versed in the importance of oil feed for bearing survival. We can only do so much when manufacturing quality transmission components and rely on builders practicing good assembly methods.
